Myrtle Beach resorts escape wildfires

A wildfire that swept through an area north of Myrtle Beach, S.C., last week forced the temporary closure of several golf courses, but none of the properties sustained significant damage.

Two of the four courses at the Barefoot Resort reported cosmetic damage to some trees and one lost a 200-foot bridge that connected several holes on its back nine. Waterway Hills Golf Club, the Grande Dunes Resort Members and Resort clubs also were threatened for a time but sustained no damage.

Most of the courses were opened for play within two to three days. 

Myrtle Beach area fire officials reported that more than 70 homes were destroyed and 100 damaged by the fire that burned nearly 20,000 acres.
